In early 2017 I accepted the amazing opportunity to paint murals in the Visitor Center of The Women's Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, NY.

Much of my work over the past five years has centered on notable historical figures from central New York State and I had already painted portraits of a few of the organizers and attendees of the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention -- Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Martha Coffin Wright, and Frederick Douglass. This murals project was right up my alley to say the least.

I submitted sketches for approval for three wall spaces of one room and planned my trip for May so that the murals would be completed for the park's annual July Convention Days event.

Day 1: pencil layout

Richard, descendant of Jane Hunt (portrayed in the mural to his right) stopped in to chat.

My very talented friend Maureen assisted me an entire Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here we see her painting the intricate lettering in record time! (The lettering in question replicates the original Women's Rights Convention announcement published in the July 14, 1848 Seneca County Courier newspaper).

More members of the Jane Hunt clan came in later the same day!

The second piece Maureen assisted with depicts the table on which Elizabeth Cady Stanton drafted The Declaration of Sentiments and includes the first line of the document central to the 1848 Women's Rights Convention.

I took a break from the full figures piece for a few days so I could get back to it with fresh eyes. Instead, I started the large murals of Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton-- bookends to the Women's Rights Convention text. These pieces are a modern representation of etched portraits.
